Secretary of State for Health & Social Care

Wes Streeting is the Labour MP for Ilford North and on 5 July 2024 was appointed Secretary of State for Health & Social Care. Previously he served in Keir Starmer’s front bench team as a Shadow Minister for Schools and Child Poverty and as Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury. Wes was first elected to Parliament in 2015 and spent five years as a member of the influential House of Commons Treasury Committee.

He is a Vice President of the Local Government Association and patron of LGBT+ Labour.

Prior to his election to Parliament, Wes served as Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health & Well-being for the London Borough of Redbridge.In his professional life he worked as a senior leader in the voluntary sector working for a range of charities focused on tackling educational inequality and disadvantage. Wes comes from a working class family and read history at Selwyn College, Cambridge. He is a former President of the National Union of Students.
