Herpes Viruses Association
The Herpes Viruses Association is a patient support organisation. At the RCGP conference, we are heading the patient-support charities consortium for patients with skin conditions working with the British Association of Dermatologists.
The HVA offers a helpline, website, Zoom meetings, London events, leaflets and quarterly journals about herpes simplex (genital herpes and cold sores). The helpline is run by trained volunteers who can answer medical questions on the condition as well as counsel people with the psychological worries that sometimes affect people. Subscribers receive quarterly journals and leaflets dealing with all aspects of the virus from ‘too many recurrences’ to ‘talking about this with a new partner’.
Shingles can leave neuropathic pain following the outbreak, especially in the elderly. This post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) can be difficult to treat and we supply a 17 page information pack that includes 6 pages written for the GP by a consultant neurologist and 2 pages of self-help written by other sufferers. We encourage the uptake of the shingles vaccines.
