Dr Emily Brookes
GP and RCGP Veterans Clinical Champion
Starting her medical career in the Army, Dr Brookes completed her GP training and spent 11 years working with the Infantry in the UK and abroad in Cyprus, Germany, Africa, Belize and Afghanistan. Developing an interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine, she completed an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine and undertook research with the Institute of Naval Medicine into MSK injuries in deployed Infantry soldiers. Dr Brookes worked with soldiers with severe life-threatening injuries and mental health problems, particularly post-deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dr Brookes transferred to the Royal Air Force, working as a GP trainer and Appraiser, trained as an aircrew medical examiner and established a First5-MOD support network in conjunction with the RCGP. Retiring as a Wing Commander in 2017, Dr Brookes worked as a GP for the MOD and the NHS as well as leading a small specialist team within UKHSA as part of the COVID-19 response.
